Introduction

Assessment is defined as the process whereby one examines and judges carefully. Assessment serves to aid in the preparation process and the selection of an adoptive family.

Assessment allows us to:

•gather information on the child
•meet and interview those who know the child best
•enhance relationships and rapport with the child
•accumulate detailed, specific information so important to recruiting and preparing prospective families for placement
•seek alternative placements.

A comprehensive assessment is the core of every successful placement, whether it be foster care, residential or adoptive placement.

Assessment of the child must be done in the context of viewing the child's attachment to parental figures and the effects of separation and loss of parental figures. Knowledge of child development is crucial in the assessment process.
