Multiethnic Placement Support
| Philosophy |
The Department of Children and Families is committed to
assisting families and children in multiethnic placements to
- develop coping skills
- model healthy attitudes about race
- develop positive connections with individuals of the childs race
- develop strategies to discuss race, the dynamics of racism, and cultural myths,
generalizations and stereotypes
- promote a sense of racial and cultural pride in the child by facilitating participation
in appropriate cultural and educational events
- enable children to explore their racial identity and to interact with children who are
experiencing similar placement situations
- provide for the childs personal needs, such as hair grooming and skin care
- develop knowledge of the significant role that people of the childs race have
played in the history of this country and the childs country of origin.

| Policy |
When a child is placed with a family of a different race,
culture or language, the Department shall provide the foster parents, children in
placement, the familys own children, and DCF staff with on-going support and
training for multiethnic awareness, parenting, and coping skills. Cross-References:

| Resource Materials |
The Office of Foster and Adoption Services and the DCF
Training Academy shall provide regional offices with a collection of informational
resources including audiovisual and written materials, both fiction and non-fiction,
concerning multiethnic issues. These resources shall be available to parents, children
and DCF staff. |
