The Foster Family Considered as Adoptive Applicants

Discuss Plans With Foster Parents During the termination process, the Social Worker should be discussing plans for the child's future with the foster parents as part of a team.
Question From the Child's Point of View If the foster parents are interested in adopting the child and are seen as a good resource, the following are questions to be considered by the Department from the child's point of view:

•What are the alternative resources for the child if he/she is not adopted by the foster family? Is the child aware of these alternatives?

•Does the child see himself/herself as part of the foster family? Does he/she want to be adopted by this family? Is the child free to make his/her feelings known about this? Does he/she understand that the final decision will be made by adults?

•Can the child deal with possible future involvement on the part of the biological parents? If they live in the same town, can he/she accept this?

•If the child has siblings, what is the relationship with the child? Consideration should be given to their placement together. If they are not placed together, will there be an opportunity for them to maintain contact?

Foster Parent Assessment Please refer to "Foster Parent Assessment," including transracial/transcultural factors, policy 48-12-3 in this chapter.
