CHILD PROTECTIVE INVESTIGATIONS
Removal Of A Child

34-10-7
Placement Considerations

Policy The investigator shall consult with his/her supervisor regarding the placement of a child into out-of-home care.
Considerations for Selecting a Placement When selecting a placement setting, investigators and supervisors shall consider the following:
  • Every effort must be made to keep siblings together.
  • Adequately preparing the child and substitute caretakers for the placement is essential.
  • The prospective caretaker’s ability to deal with the abuse and its effect on the child must be assessed in an objective and sensitive way.
  • Temporary placement with relatives to whom the child is emotionally attached and who can ensure the safety of the child may be the most desirable arrangement.
  • Placement with a relative or a non-related caretaker with whom the child is familiar requires the completion of an assessment for a relative certification or special study license.
  • Substitute caretakers must be willing to help the child resolve the problem as well as to preserve and strengthen the child’s relationship with his/her family.

Considerations When Removing or Moving a Child

Whenever it is necessary for children and/or youth to move, their personal possessions shall be treated with respect and recognition of the personal value to the child.  Children and youth shall be provided with adequate and sufficient luggage to transport their belongings.
